WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Lesko (AZ-08) led a letter to U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm opposing the Department of Energy’s proposed rule that would require an energy performance standard for residential cooktops.
“This rule is a back door attempt to ban gas stoves and expand the federal government’s influence over Americans’ daily lives,” said Congresswoman Lesko. “I am proud to lead my colleagues in urging Secretary Granholm not to finalize this proposed rule that bans nearly all gas stoves and eliminates consumer choice.”
The Department of Energy’s supplemental notice of proposed rulemaking sets energy conservation standards for consumer conventional cooking products at the most stringent maximum energy consumption requirement for gas cooktops, which is at the maximum technologically feasible (“max-tech”) level. Only 4 percent of gas cooktops on the market meet the “max-tech” requirements, which would result in 96 percent of the products available today being eliminated from the market.
Lesko was joined by House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (NY-21), House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (WA-05), House Veterans Affairs Committee Chair Michael Bost (IL-12), House Ethics Committee Chair Michael Guest (MS-03), House Ways and Means Committee Chair Jason Smith (MO-08), House Agriculture Committee Chair Glenn Thompson (PA-15), House Natural Resources Committee Chair Bruce Westerman (AR-04), House Small Business Committee Chair Roger Williams (TX-25), Energy, Climate, and Grid Security Subcommittee Chair Jeff Duncan (SC-03), and Representatives Rick Allen (GA-12), Troy Balderson (OH-12), Andy Biggs (AZ-05), Gus Bilirakis (FL-12), Lauren Boebert (CO-03), Larry Bucshon (IN-08), Michael Burgess (TX-26), Eric Burlison (MO-07), Kat Cammack (FL-03), Buddy Carter (GA-01), Lori Chavez-DeRemer (OR-05), Rick Crawford (AR-01), Dan Crenshaw (TX-02), John Curtis (UT-03), Warren Davidson (OH-08), Mike Ezell (MS-04), Randy Feenstra (IA-04), Brad Finstad (MN-01), Russell Fry (SC-07), Russ Fulcher (ID-01), Glenn Grothman (WI-06), Harriet Hageman (WY-AL), Diana Harshbarger (TN-01), Richard Hudson (NC-09), Darrell Issa (CA-48), Ronny Jackson (TX-13), Bill Johnson (OH-06), John Joyce (PA-13), Mike Kelly (PA-16), Nick Langworthy (NY-23), Bob Latta (OH-05), Michael Lawler (NY-17), Blaine Luetkemeyer (MO-03), Tracey Mann (KS-01), Rich McCormick (GA-06), Mary Miller (IL-15), Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01), Alex Mooney (WV-02), Greg Murphy (NC-03), Troy Nehls (TX-22), Dan Newhouse (WA-04), Ralph Norman (SC-05), Jay Obernolte (CA-23), Andy Ogles (TN-05), Gary Palmer (AL-06), Greg Pence (IN-06), Scott Perry (PA-10), Bill Posey (FL-08), Chip Roy (TX-21), Austin Scott (GA-08), Adrian Smith (NE-03), Pete Stauber (MN-08), Claudia Tenney (NY-24), Tom Tiffany (WI-07), William Timmons (SC-04), David Valadao (CA-22), Jeff Van Drew (NJ-02), Ann Wagner (MO-02), Tim Walberg (MI-05), Randy Weber (TX-14), Daniel Webster (FL-11), Rob Wittman (VA-01), Ryan Zinke (MT-01) in sending the letter.
