Press Releases

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Lesko (AZ-08) released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives voted on H.R. 5525, the Spending Reduction and Border Security Act:

“Today, I voted for the Spending Reduction and Border Security Act to ensure that the men and women defending our nation in the military and the Border Patrol are paid, while also advancing critical spending cuts and putting pressure on the U.S. Senate to secure our southern border. House Republicans have already approved funding for nearly 70% of the United States government and these important bills await consideration in the U.S. Senate. This stopgap funding measure would have allowed us to continue our work to rein in spending in the remaining appropriations bills over the next 30 days. I am disappointed that this measure did not pass, but remain committed to reducing spending and securing the border.”

The Spending Reduction and Border Security Act would have funded the government through October 31, 2023, making a 29.9% cut to non-defense, non-Veterans Affairs, non-Homeland Security, and non-disaster relief spending. Additionally, the bill would have secured the southern border by enacting key provisions of House Republicans’ H.R. 2, including resuming construction of the border wall and reinstating remain in Mexico.
