WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Lesko’s (AZ-08) Hands Off Our Home Appliances Act, which prohibits the U.S. Department of Energy from prescribing any new or amended energy efficiency standards for a product that are not technologically feasible and economically justified, passed the U.S. House of Representatives with bipartisan support.

“I am saddened that we would need such a bill,” said Congresswoman Lesko. “However, as we have experienced under this administration, the Department of Energy has unleashed an avalanche of new regulations for household products, including stoves, dishwashers, washing machines, showers, toilets, water heaters, air conditioners, heat pumps, and furnaces. No government bureaucrat should EVER scheme to take away Americans’ appliances in the name of a radical environmental agenda, yet that is exactly what we have seen under the Biden Administration. I was proud to lead the House Republican effort to protect our gas stoves, and I am proud to again lead this effort to protect our home appliances.”

The Hands Off Our Home Appliances Act implements policies to help everyday American consumers. First, the legislation requires new energy efficiency standards to be cost-effective. Second, the proposal mandates actual energy or waters savings for any new standard. Finally, this bill prevents any household appliance from being banned by the federal government based on fuel usage.

This bill is the second Lesko proposal to pass the U.S. House of Representatives in the 118^th Congress. Last year, a bipartisan coalition of U.S. Representatives approved the Save Our Gas Stoves Act, which blocks the Department of Energy from implementing a proposed efficiency standard for gas cooking products.
