WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 8281, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act with bipartisan support. U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Lesko (AZ-08), a cosponsor of the legislation, voted for the election integrity measure. The SAVE Act stipulates that all individuals voting in federal elections must be U.S. citizens to register to vote and to participate in any elections.

“Election integrity is one of my top priorities. I voted yes on the SAVE Act to ensure that only U.S. citizens can vote,” said Congresswoman Lesko. “The integrity of our elections should be fully safeguarded, and all public servants, regardless of party affiliation, should strive to ensure that only U.S. citizens vote in U.S. elections. Illegal immigrants have no business voting in our elections. I am disappointed that a majority of Democrats voted against this commonsense legislation, and I hope the U.S. Senate allows this legislation to receive due consideration.”

H.R. 8281, the SAVE Act, was sponsored by U.S. Congressman Chip Roy (TX-21) and cosponsored by 104 members of Congress.

The SAVE Act amends the National Voter Registration Act. The bill requires states to obtain proof of U.S. citizenship when someone registers to vote in a federal election. The bill also requires states to establish a program to remove non-citizens from existing voter rolls and it empowers citizens to bring civil suits against election officials that fail to uphold the SAVE Act.
