Congresswoman Debbie Lesko (R-AZ) and Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (R-MO) traveled to the southern border this week for an update from Customs and Border Protection on their ongoing efforts to secure the border. Following passage of her bill to secure ports of entry into the United States (H.R. 6400, the United States Ports of Entry Threat and Operational Review Act), Congresswoman Lesko toured the entry points at the Port of Nogales. At the conclusion of the border trip, Congresswoman Debbie Lesko released the following statement:
“First and foremost, the brave men and women of Customs and Border Protection are doing a great job of protecting our border and keeping our nation safe. It is clear, however, that Mexican cartels are finding more and more ways to smuggle in deadly drugs and traffic vulnerable women and children. We must close the loopholes in our immigration laws that continue to be exploited. We also need to utilize more technology at the border and finally build a wall to help alleviate much of these problems.”
Background: In July, Congresswoman Debbie Lesko introduced H.R. 6400. The House Homeland Security Committee unanimously approved H.R. 6400 on July 24, 2018, and on September 4, 2018, the billed passed out of the House of Representatives. H.R. 6400 requires the Secretary of Homeland Security to conduct a threat and operational analysis of all air, land, and sea ports of entry in the United States and create an operational strategy and implementation plan. A thorough review of all our ports will make our communities—and our nation—safer.
