Press Releases

WASHINGTON, D.C.—This week, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) released its final rule for energy efficiency standards for residential cooking products. The long-awaited publication from the Biden Administration marked a positive turn from the initial regulatory proposal after congressional action led by U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Lesko (AZ-08) and additional feedback from around the country.

“I'm pleased that the bipartisan passage of my Save Our Gas Stoves Act in the U.S. House of Representatives helped the Biden Administration realize they had to dial back their radical agenda against gas stoves,” said Congresswoman Lesko. “With the passage of my Hands Off Our Home Appliances Act out of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, I plan to continue my fight against Biden’s radical agenda.”

According to the DOE, “approximately 97 percent of gas stove models and 77 percent of smooth electric stove models already meet (the) standards,” and “compliance will be required by newly manufactured, including imported, models beginning January 31, 2028.” In comparison, a 2023 DOE technical report showed that 96 percent of the market share of gas stoves would not have met the increased regulatory burden from the original draft rule.

Last summer, Congresswoman Lesko’s Save Our Gas Stoves Act passed the U.S. House of Representatives with bipartisan support. This bill prevents the Secretary of Energy from implementing energy conservation standards if the standards result in the unavailability of a product on account of the type of fuel the product uses. The bill awaits consider in the U.S. Senate.

Late last year, Congresswoman Lesko’s Hands Off Our Home Appliances Act passed the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce. This legislation prohibits DOE from prescribing any new or amended energy efficiency standards for a product that are not technologically feasible and economically justified. The bill now awaits consideration on the House Floor.
