WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, H.R. 7718, the Protecting the Health and Wellness of Babies and Pregnant Women in Custody Act, passed the House Committee on the Judiciary. U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Lesko (AZ-08) is a lead Republican sponsor of the bill. The bill was introduced earlier this year by Representatives Karen Bass (D-CA-37) and Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA-14) and Congresswoman Lesko.

“I was pleased to see this bill pass with bipartisan support in the House Judiciary Committee,” said Congresswoman Lesko following the passage of the bill. “It is important that we protect life and provide a safe environment for the rising number of incarcerated expectant mothers and their babies. With its data collection, health care standards, and training, this bill will improve conditions for expectant mothers. I am hopeful the bill will advance quickly to the floor of the House of Representative for a full vote.”
