WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Lesko (AZ-08) sent a letter to President Joe Biden expressing concern over reports that the Biden Administration is considering lifting Title 42 public health protections. Title 42 provides immigration officials with public health authority to prevent the introduction of a communicable disease, such as COVID-19, into the United States by expelling illegal immigrants who would otherwise be held in close proximity to each other in detention.

“I am urging the Biden Administration to retain Title 42, which was put in place to protect the American people from the spread of COVID-19,” said Congresswoman Lesko. “During my recent visit to the Southern Border, I heard from agents at every stage of the immigration process—Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations and Air and Marine Operations, Border Patrol, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement—who all shared concerns that undoing Title 42 would exacerbate the ongoing crisis at our border and worsen the public health threat from COVID-19. Since migrants from all over the world have been apprehended at our Southern Border, I call on President Biden to keep Americans safe."
